There are many superb golf courses in the beautiful county of Northumberland in the north east of England so if you live in the town of Killingworth or are visiting the area, you will find plenty of options close by. Not only do these offer excellent golfing facilities but many are set amid some of the county’s most dramatic landscapes with stunning views across the surrounding countryside and coast.
Some of the coastal courses are nestled just metres from the beaches, overlooking the North Sea where golfers may even be privy to additional natural sights as this area is also renowned for its marine life including pods of dolphins which are regularly spotted swimming close to the shore here. There are some challenging courses in these locations including Goswick, Warkworth, Dunstanburgh Castle Golf Course and Newbiggin-by-the-Sea. Considered to be one of the best in the region, the Dunstanburgh Castle Golf Course in Embleton near Alnick offers an 18 hole course (6298 yard, par 70) that is suitable for golfers of all skill levels. The course was designed by itself lies beneath the shadow of the castle itself and James Braid who is deemed to be one of the finest golf course architects of his generation. Braid was of Scottish descent and became a professional golfer in 1896 at the age of twenty six. This is a true links course which was founded in 1900 then expanded in 1922 and lies in the shadow of the castle itself, adjacent to the nearby sand dunes and surrounded by rare flora and fauna species too. The course also has incredible views of some of the best scenery that the North-East coast has to offer, as well as a comfortable and spacious club room, separate restaurant and lounger/bar plus full changing room and shower facilities.
Further inland you will find additional championship golf courses including Burgham Park and Slaley Hall, with the former being the home of the annual PGA North Region Championship. The European and Senior golf tours also hold regular events in Northumberland so if you enjoy watching professional golf as well as playing amateur golf then check out what is on in the area and when so you don’t miss out on being part of one of these tournaments. In addition there are numerous nine hole courses dotted around the county as well as a number of driving ranges for practice so you will be sure to find a course that suits your requirements perfectly without having to travel very far. Green fees in the area start at £15 but the Northumberland Golfers Passport is a newly introduced scheme that gives discount of standard rates which enables golfers in the area to play on some of the county’s best course at a very reasonable price. These can be purchased from any of Northumberland’s Tourist Information and Centres, which entitles the holder to three rounds of golf on any of the courses at participating clubs.
